What To Do in the First 72 Hours
The first few days after any surgery are important. You will be feeling sore around the surgical site, and possibly quite tired. Protecting the wound and taking care of yourself can be the key to dental implant success.
- Rest- Too much movement can increase your blood flow and can make swelling even worse.
- Protect the blood clot- Avoid touching the surgical site. Messing with it too much can disrupt the blood clot and cause excessive bleeding and invite infection.
- Keep Things Clean- The name of the game is “avoid infection.”Do not brush the surgical site directly for the first few days. Instead, use a warm salt water rinse to keep the wound clean.

Nutrition
After your surgery, your mouth will understandably be tender and sore, and you may not be in the mood to eat much of anything right away. But it’s important to make sure your body is getting the nutrients you need to heal.
- Soft foods diet- This one may seem like it goes without saying, but consuming soft foods like mashed potatoes, ice cream, soups, pudding, and more can help you get nutrition without irritating your new implant.
- Stay Hydrated- This can help you keep your mouth moist. Just avoid using a straw; suction can harm your recovery.
- Avoid Alcohol and Nicotine- These substances aren’t good for you on your best day, but they are even worse when you are trying to heal. Nicotine restricts blood vessels and significantly reduces blood flow and immune response, and alcohol can cause excessive bleeding and irritate the wound.
- Focus on Vitamin C and D- These vitamins are important for producing collagen and calcium, respectively, both of which are essential for healing after dental surgery.

Professional Follow-Up
Your implant dentist will provide specific instructions for caring for your new dental implant and the surgical site around it. It is important to follow these instructions to the letter and make sure you go to any follow-up appointments you have scheduled.
